With the first day of summer coming on June 20, Travel + Leisure magazine has named the best places to visit as the solstice comes into view. One of Upstate New York’s beautiful regions made the list.
The national publication picked 10 places to plan a summer road trip and the Finger Lakes earned acclaim next to places like California’s Highway 1, Maine’s Bar Harbor and more.
The magazine writes that the Finger Lakes, sandwiched between Rochester and Syracuse, offers a wide range of socially-distant outdoor experiences. They mention its beautiful lakes and waterfalls to swim in, scores of wineries along wine trails, homemade ice cream, and locally made cheeses on the Finger Lakes Cheese Trail to sample.
Foodies will also want to visit small Finger Lakes towns that have bustling food scenes.
Want to put a European twist on your adventure? The article gives a shout out to Erie Canal Adventures where you can rent a houseboat to meander through the region and have a one-of-a-kind nightly stay. The boats come equipped with kitchens, bathrooms, showers, bikes, grills, and more.
For history buffs, Travel + Leisure refers people to the National Women’s Hall of Fame Museum in Seneca Falls, where the Women’s Rights movement was launched. The museum recently moved and expanded into the rehabilitated 1844 Seneca Knitting Mill.
To round out the offerings in the Finger Lakes region, there are plenty of hiking trails, the best park in the state, and a theme park which is now open for the season.
