It’s finally official: A pre-test or proof of vaccine is no longer needed for interisland travel in Hawaii, marking another huge step in the state’s COVID-19 recovery.

Previously, travelers moving between islands without a pre-test or proof of vaccine would have to quarantine for 10-14 days.

Further complicating matters was that only vaccinations administered in Hawaii were accepted, and pre-tests had to be taken within 72 hours of arrival from approved vendors only, leading to significant expense (pre-tests ranged from $140-$200 in most cases) and even mix-ups that resulted in travelers being denied entry (people had a pre-test from an unapproved vendor).

Going forward, island hopping in Hawaii will be more convenient and less expensive, although the tight restrictions for entering Hawaii in the first place still remain in effect.

Trans-Pacific travelers who are vaccinated outside of Hawaii will still need to submit the results of a pre-test at their initial point of entry in order to avoid quarantine. After that, they will be free to move about the islands with no further testing.

Earlier this month, Hawaii said it will continue to require a pre-test from travelers until the vaccination rate in the state reaches 60%. At that point, it will allow travelers who received their vaccine on the mainland to enter without a pre-test.

When the State’s vaccination rate reaches 70%, all restrictions of the Hawaii Safe Travels program will end – although a recent report indicated that that number could be flexible.

As of this writing, the vaccination rate in Hawaii is approximately 56%.
